Requiring a Research Appointment

Many programs/classes have found it beneficial to require students to meet with a librarian at the beginning of the research process.  Students have also seen the value in these appointments as they learn about additional resources. They are often amazed by how many resources the library has to aid them in their research.

Why require a research appointment

  • Ensure students get started in the right direction
  • Ensure students locate high quality academic sources

Things to consider when requiring a meeting:

  • Inform the library of the following:
    • Approximate number of students in course
    • Assignment description
    • Assignment due date
  • Have students get a librarian signature
    • Requiring a signature ensures that the students take the appointment seriously, allows a librarian to review possible sources to ensure sources are academic, authoritative, credible, etc.
